The meeting of Information Systems and Telecommunication study committee of Cigre Iran in international power system conference

Alongside with 34th international power system conference, Information Systems and Telecommunication study committee (SC D2), held a technical session entitled “Migration towards IP/MPLS networks in power utilities-demands and trends” on December 11, 2019 in Niroo Research Institute.

In this session, Mr. Vahid Veysi from Monenco Iran Consulting Engineers started with short description of IEC 61850 reference models. Then he introduced different power utility services and their associated quality of service requirements. Furthermore, Mr. Veysi discussed current TDM-based communication infrastructure of power utilities and its problems and challenges for responding the future demands of power industry. These problems and shortages in current TDM-based communication networks like SDH, has motivated power industry to seek modern alternatives like IP/MPLS-based networks. Migration trends from TDM-based communication infrastructures to IP/MPLS ones was among other topics which was discussed in the session. Also relevant case studies and CIGRE papers regarding migration toward IP/MPLS networks were reviewed. Finally technical and non-technical factors which shall be evaluated in order to decide about which technology could benefit power industry, were introduced. The session was completed with questions and answers.
